Why 48V racks are winning commercial vans

Lower current, cooler cables, room to parallel VT48500 — how 48V ESS is changing professional vehicle installs.

Commercial van with 48V onboard energy storage

Professional van and service-vehicle builds are moving from 12V-only leisure layouts to 48V energy storage systems (ESS) — especially where high continuous loads, overnight hotel power or workshop tools are part of the brief.

At 48V, the same wattage draws roughly a quarter of the current of a 12V bank. That means thinner cabling, less voltage drop, cooler terminals and more headroom to parallel additional rack modules as the fleet spec evolves.

The physics in plain terms

Power (W) = voltage × current. Doubling voltage halves current for the same load; moving 12V → 48V cuts current to one quarter. In a cramped van install, that difference shows up as:

  • Smaller DC cable runs between battery, inverter and distribution
  • Less heat in lugs, busbars and fuse holders under sustained load
  • Easier compliance with voltage-drop limits on long cable runs
  • Room to add capacity without re-engineering the whole DC layout

When 48V makes sense

48V racks suit fleets running inverter loads above ~2kW continuous, multiple overnight AC outlets, compressors, EVSE pre-conditioning or mobile workshop equipment. If the brief is a single fridge and LED lighting, 12V may still be enough — but spec creep is common in commercial builds.

“Installers tell us the tipping point is when they would have needed 95mm² at 12V — at 48V the same job fits in a serviceable cable size with margin to expand.”

Sizing tip

Start with your peak and continuous AC loads, back-calculate inverter size, then size the 48V bank for runtime at that load plus DC-DC replenishment while driving. Our team can sanity-check VT48500 parallel strings and Vulcan combi selection against your alternator and starter bank.
